Academic Papers

As a masters candidate studying Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science I worked with a team to design a study exploring the impact–if any–virtual reality experiences have on building empathy. The eight month research effort yielded this paper, which was accepted to CHI Play.

Co-author on research study exploring emotion capture in virtual reality and the design of a light weight UX research protocol for assessing player empathy resulting from VR games and experiences.

Paper accepted to CHI Play, to be presented Oct. 2017 in Amsterdam.

Journalism

I began my career as a journalist and, later, editor covering the business of government and the convergence of public policy, technology and management. I've been an editorial and digital leader at Bloomberg Government, Government Executive, Nextgov and Defense One and my work has been featured on TheAtlantic.com, National Journal and The Des Moines Register.

Series: NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins - The Only Thing Washington Can Agree On
Reporting featured in TheAtlantic.com, National Journal and Government Executive

I spent six months reporting on and profiling Dr. Francis Collins, the Director of the National Institutes of Health and leader of the Human Genome Project in the 1990s. What started off as a leadership profile became an in-depth expose on the economics of medical research funding in the face of sequestration and the 2013 government shutdown.

Following on my feature story in July, I continued to track the story for The Atlantic. At this point, things were moving quickly as the federal budget debate came to a head in late 2013. I continued to interview Dr. Collins, NIH leadership and members of Congress to understand what the budget prospects looked like for the organization following the government shutdown and a bi-partisan effort to restore NIH funding.

The Budget Deal: An Okay End to a Very Bad Year for Medical Research

The Atlantic.com
Atlantic Media | December 2013

In what was an exhausting year of whiplash for the medical research community, I concluded my reporting on the NIH's budgetary woes on a high note. A compromise budget passed Congress and, in it, much of the damage to the NIH was halted and slowly reversed. Today, into the Trump administration, Dr. Collins remains NIH Director (one of the only directors to stay on for more than eight years) and continues to use his unique communication style to win bi-partisan support for the agenda of the NIH at a time of unparalleled political polarization.

Content Marketing

Following several years as a journalist, I moved to the business side of media and technology where I was a client-facing content marketing leader at Atlantic Media, the content marketing director at Bloomberg Government and a content consultant for, among many verticals, Bloomberg BNA, Bloomberg New Energy Finance, Bloomberg Philanthropies and Bloomberg's UX Blog.
